The music of the Pixies is visual, as in the lyrics of their songs are image provoking as well as poetic. Mixed with the acoustic as well as electronic music added to the poetry of their songs makes a perfect blend of mind opening, attitude lifting and sometimes darkening pleasantries for your world. The name of the band The Pixies comes from another mythical world, bringing visions of little trouble causing folks that run free and wild in the trees and forests, even finding makeshift forests in our own yards. To us apartment dwelling humans a Pixie can even find a home with us in our humble surroundings and follow us from home to home as we move along in this journey of life. In reality the band is made up of four very talented human beings. Black Francis- vocals/rhythm guitar, Joey Santiago- lead guitar, Kim Deals- bass/vocals and David Lovering- drums.
The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston Massachusetts in 1986. They achieved modest commercial success in their own home county but were significantly more successful in the United Kingdom and Mainland Europe. The Band broke up in 1993 under angry and bitter circumstances… but regrouped in 2004 to find their fans eagerly waiting, selling out concerts and world tours. The Pixies popularity grew without them giving any extra effort other than just being a great unorthodox band. Combining surf music and punk rock was the magic key to their success and they should keep up the creative scramble for many years to come. Hopefully they will last long enough for my children to see them perform, but if not… I plan on keeping them in my music library forever… So, at least that way they will get the gist of what they were about and why I love them so much.
The band’s music incorporates extreme dynamic shifts; Black Francis explained in 1991, “Those are the tow basic components of rock music… the dreamy side and the rock’n side. It’s always been either sweaty or laid back and cool. We do try to be dynamic, but its dumbo dynamics, because we don’t know how to do anything else. We can play loud or quiet- that’s it”. Black Francis is the main songwriter of the group and has written about several offbeat and taboo subjects such as extraterrestrials, surrealism, incest and biblical violence, but has managed to make each song beautiful in its own artistic way.
Albums by the Pixies you should defiantly pick up and listen to at least once in your life time are Surfer Rosa (1988), Doolittle (1989), Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991).
It’s interesting to hear what comes out of an artist mind that has been influenced by such a wide range of music and media artist and genres; each member came from a different musical background and it shows in the final product of their art. When he first started writing for the Pixies, Francis says he was listening to nothing but Husker Du, Captain Beefheart, and Iggy Pop. His other influences included The Gun Club and the Cars. Writing for the album Doolittle he was deep into the Beatles. Santiago listened to Black Flag and David Bowie. Among guitarist who influenced him that strikes a chord in my mind is Jimi Hendrix.
Now keep in mind that this is a short article. This band and its members deserve a lot more research and of course listing to by music lovers around the world. I hope I was able to shed a little light on them and introduce you to a new life experience of having them in your musical likings. xo
