Where does one start when they are writing about such a legend as Jimi Hendrix? He is probably the most talked about guitar player in the world that has ever existed. He has influenced so many people in the music world, all the way to the famous to your everyday lovers of music. Some that are simply content with listening to his music and regarding him as the best. Then you have the fanatics who know every bit of trivia and information pertaining to the Rock God, who… to some folks seems immortal. They collect everything they can get their hands on that has anything to do with him, every record, poster, book, shirt and any random memorabilia that can “Light their fire” so to speak, for the great man who created his own language with the sound of his guitar. Then you have the folks who he has inspired to go on to their own musical career, feeling the infectious urge to pick up a guitar at a young age, perfecting it and finding their own style…taking them on a musical journey all their own. Some finding stardom and giving Jimi Hendrix credit for all his inspiration, some staying underground in garage bands all over the world. Either way you look at it the guitarist certainly made his mark on the world, forever changing the history of music, and the people who he touched with his tunes and words.

He was born November 27, 1942 in Seattle, Washington and left this earth to soon in my opinion on September 18, 1970 in London at the age of 27. His birth certificate names him Johnny Allen Hendrix, sounds like a rock star’s name to me.. wonder why he changed it. The worlds most famous guitar player was also a prolific song writer. I recently listened to a recorded interview of him where he stated that he wanted to be respected for his songwriting skills. In this interview he also talks about how he doesn’t really plan the songs hes playing, he and the band have the basic foundation of the songs, but never play it the same while performing, they go off of feeling. They way the music takes them is the way the song goes. Listening to his music, I can see how that gives the song a life of its own…giving each piece its own handcrafted one of a kind feeling. The audience and the life long fans appreciate that deeply, or maybe I should just speak for myself… but that definitely makes him one of my favorite artist of all time. The feeling and emotion he puts into his music is priceless, just like the feelings and emotions his songs conjure up in when while listening.

In one of his well know quotes states “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.” We are still struggling with that task till this day. Maybe we should take that as a personal message and use it in our own lives, then we will find peace in our own world. A great verse in one of his songs goes..”Who are you to judge the life I live… I know I’m not perfect and I don’t live to be. but before you start pointing fingers make sure your hands are clean.” Great words to live by, given to us by a great man indeed.
